ROTARY SPORT HAS A WORLD CHAMPION IN OUR MIDST

ROTARY SPORT HAS A WORLD CHAMPION IN OUR MIDST

Late in October in Germany, a story was written with Rotary Sport at the forefront. Out there in the world championships of kickboxing was a young 14-year old British super talent – Mia Purkiss. Going into the tournament on a superb run of good form, Mia was still going into the championship needing to prove the talent that she possesses can indeed transform into titles.

And on 28 October, it did, as she was crowned World Champion in the Under-15 category! In addition she won silver as member of the GB team in the teams event.

Mia is a 14-year old Basingstoke athlete who received the backing and support of Rotary Sport England Basingstoke and we are proud to be associated with such immense talent.

Mia and her family were never in doubt as to her ability to conquer the world. And we showed immense belief in her which she justified proudly.

“Watching her donning the Rotary Sport shirts all through her stay in Germany fills us with pride and we hope it will inspire even more success from her and inspire others to go for the top prizes no matter the challenges” were the words of Rotary Sport International President Dr Tunde Adelakun, who showered multiple words of congratulations on the achievement of Mia and the support shown by her family. “Mia’s family was her number one support and her parents David and xxx who went through a lot to create the time to follow her everywhere she went, deserves special mention”.

Commenting on this achievement, Rotary Club England Basingstoke Secretary Odunayo Amigun said “
We’re absolutely thrilled to once again announce Mia’s incredible victory, and we’re so proud to see her rocking the club logo with pride! 🙌 This is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support of our amazing club.

Mia’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational, and we’re honored to have been a part of it. She’s a true champion, and her success is a reflection of the incredible talent and spirit of our club.

Thank you Mia for making us proud!”

It is our commitment to inspire more champions. Basingstoke is proud of Mia. Rotary Sport is proud of Mia. Now on to the next one!

ALL IN ONE WEEK – PROGRESS

ALL IN ONE WEEK - PROGRESS

November promises to be a special month in Rotary Sport, going by how it started in various parts of the world.

Excitement seems to be the overriding and dominant word for where Rotary Sport is being talked about. Early in the month, the inaugural meeting of Rotary Sport in Nigeria held where it was agreed that a specific District charter will be pursued such that Rotary Sport in Lagos Nigeria will be a separate standalone club under the tenets of Rotary International and chartered under Rotary District 9111.

Rotarian Femi Abioye

The meeting which held in Ikeja agreed that charter will be pursued for the first of such a club in Nigeria – to be known officially as Rotary Sport Club of Nigeria One.

The District Governor of Rotary D9111 Rotarian Henry Akinyele welcomed the move and pledged total support for the establishment of the new club in his district.

Rotary Sport International President Dr Tunde Adelakun was personally and physically present in the meeting and he presided over it, answering questions from the prospective members on how Rotary works.

At the end of the meeting, Rotarian Femi Abioye, an astute sports administrator and academic in Nigeria was appointed President of the Steering Council that will actialise the charter process. Rtn Abioye will be supported in this role by Rtns Toyin Ibitoye and Interim Secretary Oluwaseyi.

Only a few days later, the inaugural physical meeting of the brand new Rotary Sport Club of Rwanda held in Kigali where, in similar format, members, many happily migrating from various other clubs in Rwanda to support and build a family of sport in Rwanda converged to rubberstamp the desire of the club to be chartered in Rotary District 9145.

Championed by ‘chartering club’ Rotary Club of Kigali Virunga which committed man and resources into the setting of Rotary Sport Rwanda, Rotary Sport Charter President in waiting is Charlie Haba who is also a migrating member of the former club.

Rotary Sport Club Rwanda already boasts of a high profile sporting presence including tennis champion Joselyn Umulisa as well as former President of the Rwanda Football Federation Celestin Ntagungira. Also in prime position of leadership is the spearhead of the game of pickleball in Rwanda, Zacharie Kamugisha.
