AFTER THE CHARTER…CAME THE MEETING

AFTER THE CHARTER…CAME THE MEETING

The very first official meeting of Rotary Sport Rwanda after its official charter was held on Saturday 17 January at the Cercle Sportif Club, Kigali. At the meeting, congratulations flowed around at the attainment of charter status, the certificate of which arrived just a couple of days before.

It was a joyous occasion where members freely expressed their enthusiasm at what is starting in Rwanda, through Rotary.  Offices and responsibilities were shared, and action points were assigned to members.

Charter President Sport-Rotarian Charlie Haba expressed his thanks to District, through Assistant Governor Suman, and called on members to ‘let’s start things immediately and show the wider Rotary that we in Rwanda, can be pacesetters in the building and sustenance of the Rotary family.

CP Charlie called on members who ideas on any projects or events that they would want to have RS adopt to submit their proposals to the central email address. Meanwhile, Global President Dr Tunde made a short submission on a proposed event to kickstart operations of RS in Rwanda, and this is being considered by the executive. President-Elect Zacharie Kamugisha also presented his idea, as did Sport Rotarian Marlon Weir.

It was an active and buoyant meeting that showed potential of many great things to come to Rotary, through Sport, and in Rwanda and beyond.

ROTARY SPORT FAMILY GROWS – RWANDA IS BORN!

ROTARY SPORT FAMILY GROWS - RWANDA IS BORN!

Rotary Sport has received its second charter from Rotary International. This club, a sporting brand of the wider RI, set up and having received its first charter in its birthplace Basingstoke in the UK, has been established with a view to spreading the word of sport globally. The objective is to use sport to promote selflessness; to use sport to enhance and highlight the seven pillars of Rotary; to bring sports development to societies and communities, and use the power of the benevolence of Rotary to create sporting stories, by supporting promising talent in achieving their dream.

Having operated out of birthplace Basingstoke UK for a year, the initiators of the movement branched out into various countries, building the concept and by that, building the size of the overall Rotary family; recruiting members to join Rotary.

And so the news has entered, that one of the first countries that this concept was shared, Rwanda, became the first club after the pioneer club, to be granted Rotary International charter!

Great news!

Rotary Club of Sport Rwanda (as it is to be known formally) was supported and guided through to charter by the existing Rotary Club of Kigali Virunga, and also notably the support of District 9150 Assistant Governor Alla Suman.

The input of Rotarian Paul Masterjab of Kigali Virunga is noted, as was the input of Charter President  Charlie Haba, who gladly and willingly migrated from Virunga in order to ensure that the vision of the creator of the Rotary Sport movement, Global President Dr Tunde Adelakun, comes to fruition.

Dr Tunde Adelakun

In response, GP Dr Tunde said, ‘for me this is a dream come true. It’s not just another charter…it is the charter of a place I call my second home. I always wanted Rwanda to be the next one to get chartered due to my close affiliation with the country, and I believe that with the people who have willingly come to join us, and my transparent support for this particular club, we can change the sporting landscape in Rwanda for the better. I thank all who have made this possible’, he concluded.

Meetings of RS Rwanda will be held every alternate Saturday in Kigali. We have members…but members are still required.

ROTARY SPORT NEW INITIATIVE – SPORTS QUIZ

ROTARY SPORT HAS A WORLD CHAMPION IN OUR MIDST

The Rotary Sport Club of England Basingstoke is wrapping up plans to hold a first-of-its-kind sports quiz amongst the secondary schools in the town.

The Quiz event is scheduled for Saturday 6 December 2025 at the South Side Refectory of the Basingstoke College of Technology.

In the words of Rotary Sport International President Dr Tunde Adelakun, this quiz is being organised to ‘bring excitement to the art of sport following, testing the knowledge of our youth in the sports that they love and follow, and giving a sense of competition and learning at the same time. Furthermore we believe it also promotes healthy camaraderie amongst the schools in Basingstoke.

Our objective has always been to use every possible means to keep sports in the psyche of all generations and while many see us as a club that only promotes players in sports, and others see us as just a sporting charity club, we are using this quiz to show that the ecosystem of sports in all nations is not only about playing and competing but also about exchanging and sharing knowledge’.

The Rotary Sport Quiz 2025 is something the Club wants to take to all parts of the world in coming years and it is great that Basingstoke will pioneer it in December.

Word has been sent to the 11 secondary schools in the town who are expected to raise a team of four students per school to come and answer questions on various aspects of sports – Olympic Sports, Football specific, other sports, and general questions in sports home and abroad.

The early stages will take place in a round robin format between 11am and 1pm and after a lunch break, the finals will hold from 2:30pm till close.

Rotary Sport is presenting prizes for winners which include trophies for schools, certificates for winning participants and are exploring the possibilities of raising funds for a laptop as prize for the winning school to help their IT/computer learning programmes.

Entries are welcome via the website. Also commercial partners are welcome to donate more prizes for the winners who will be the future of sports in our community.

And on 28 October, it did, as she was crowned World Champion in the Under-15 category! In addition she won silver as member of the GB team in the teams event.

Mia is a 14-year old Basingstoke athlete who received the backing and support of Rotary Sport England Basingstoke and we are proud to be associated with such immense talent.

Mia and her family were never in doubt as to her ability to conquer the world. And we showed immense belief in her which she justified proudly.

“Watching her donning the Rotary Sport shirts all through her stay in Germany fills us with pride and we hope it will inspire even more success from her and inspire others to go for the top prizes no matter the challenges” were the words of Rotary Sport International President Dr Tunde Adelakun, who showered multiple words of congratulations on the achievement of Mia and the support shown by her family. “Mia’s family was her number one support and her parents David and xxx who went through a lot to create the time to follow her everywhere she went, deserves special mention”.

ROTARY SPORT HAS A WORLD CHAMPION IN OUR MIDST

Late in October in Germany, a story was written with Rotary Sport at the forefront. Out there in the world championships of kickboxing was a young 14-year old British super talent – Mia Purkiss. Going into the tournament on a superb run of good form, Mia was still going into the championship needing to prove the talent that she possesses can indeed transform into titles.

And on 28 October, it did, as she was crowned World Champion in the Under-15 category! In addition she won silver as member of the GB team in the teams event.

Commenting on this achievement, Rotary Club England Basingstoke Secretary Odunayo Amigun said “
We’re absolutely thrilled to once again announce Mia’s incredible victory, and we’re so proud to see her rocking the club logo with pride! 🙌 This is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and the unwavering support of our amazing club.

Mia’s journey has been nothing short of inspirational, and we’re honored to have been a part of it. She’s a true champion, and her success is a reflection of the incredible talent and spirit of our club.

Thank you Mia for making us proud!”

It is our commitment to inspire more champions. Basingstoke is proud of Mia. Rotary Sport is proud of Mia. Now on to the next one!

ALL IN ONE WEEK – PROGRESS

ALL IN ONE WEEK - PROGRESS

November promises to be a special month in Rotary Sport, going by how it started in various parts of the world.

Excitement seems to be the overriding and dominant word for where Rotary Sport is being talked about. Early in the month, the inaugural meeting of Rotary Sport in Nigeria held where it was agreed that a specific District charter will be pursued such that Rotary Sport in Lagos Nigeria will be a separate standalone club under the tenets of Rotary International and chartered under Rotary District 9111.

Rotarian Femi Abioye

The meeting which held in Ikeja agreed that charter will be pursued for the first of such a club in Nigeria – to be known officially as Rotary Sport Club of Nigeria One.

The District Governor of Rotary D9111 Rotarian Henry Akinyele welcomed the move and pledged total support for the establishment of the new club in his district.

Rotary Sport International President Dr Tunde Adelakun was personally and physically present in the meeting and he presided over it, answering questions from the prospective members on how Rotary works.

At the end of the meeting, Rotarian Femi Abioye, an astute sports administrator and academic in Nigeria was appointed President of the Steering Council that will actialise the charter process. Rtn Abioye will be supported in this role by Rtns Toyin Ibitoye and Interim Secretary Oluwaseyi.

Only a few days later, the inaugural physical meeting of the brand new Rotary Sport Club of Rwanda held in Kigali where, in similar format, members, many happily migrating from various other clubs in Rwanda to support and build a family of sport in Rwanda converged to rubberstamp the desire of the club to be chartered in Rotary District 9145.

Championed by ‘chartering club’ Rotary Club of Kigali Virunga which committed man and resources into the setting of Rotary Sport Rwanda, Rotary Sport Charter President in waiting is Charlie Haba who is also a migrating member of the former club.

Rotary Sport Club Rwanda already boasts of a high profile sporting presence including tennis champion Joselyn Umulisa as well as former President of the Rwanda Football Federation Celestin Ntagungira. Also in prime position of leadership is the spearhead of the game of pickleball in Rwanda, Zacharie Kamugisha.

Charlie Haba

Exciting times really lie ahead in Rotary Sport as the phenomenon is catching in many parts of the world.

Watch out for more……as we continue to build the family of Rotary using the power of sport.

BASINGSTOKE MAYOR WITH ROTARY SPORT AWARDS FOR SPORT INSPIRATION

BASINGSTOKE MAYOR WITH ROTARY SPORT AWARDS FOR SPORT INSPIRATION

The Mayor of Basingstoke & Deane, Cllr Colin Philimore who initiated a sports award program which was introduced during the Rotary Sport Family Festival of July, hosted the award winners at his parlour recently, where he formally presented the Award certificates to them, assisted by the President of Rotary Sport International, RiS Dr Tunde Adelakun.

The ceremony which was held on 12 July was a culmination of the nominations made by members of the public for excellence and inspiration, in a campaign fronted by Rotary Sport.

At the ceremony, Mayor Philimore extolled the good works of the awardees and the fact that many recognised them and deemed them fit for the awards, and praised the continued effort of Rotary Sport in their efforts to keep Basingstoke on the map and keep the sporting tradition going.

The awardees – David Graham, Secretary of the Basingstoke Chess Club – was nominated by a real handful of people, and reading some of the words of the nominees, Mayor Philimore said ‘David was not only a Club Secretary but also a stalwart figure in inspiring young chess players, some as young as 6-7 years old, to play and stay in the thought-invoking sport that needs a fair bit of reasoning and concentration’.

As for the second awardee, Tarik Bilgic, a coach in Jiu Jitsu, founder of the Urso Jiu Jitsu club, a martial arts sport which teaches the art of self defence and composure. Over 50 people voted for Tarik, some of whom said he was ‘consistent in hard work and dedication, has a huge effect on discipline, fundraising and philantrophy. A truly unsung hero who also helps the society, who does not accept praise or reward because he does what he loves, and loves what he does’.

Rotary Sport President Dr ‘Tunde, in his comments, stated that the Club was committed to doing the best it can to always celebrate sporting excellence. He thanked the Mayor and congratulated the awardees on the work they have done which made numerous people recognise and nominate them for the said awards.

“We are determined to make a habit of this, to continue to unearth hidden talent, unsung heroes and elite performers on a regular basis. Awards are good, they inspire others, and make the awardee feel wanted and appreciated. This will be a regular occurrence and many more sports stars will benefit from this in the coming months’, Dr ‘Tunde said.

Mayor Philimore and David Graham reminisced over the past, and expressed hope that the initiatives of Rotary Sport will start to reshape the future of Basingstoke town and make ‘our town a sporting town, as it used to be’.

ROTARY SPORT AT DISTRICT 1145 DG INSTALLATION

ROTARY SPORT AT DISTRICT 1145 DG INSTALLATION

The start of the new Rotary year is July, and every year, a new President is installed for each and every Rotary Club worldwide. Even Rotary International got a new President. It is tradition. Rotary Presidency is usually for one year, and new leaders step up and take office, in most cases.

It is the same with all of Rotary Club’s districts. Every year there is a district governor for each and every one of the 529 districts worldwide; and District 1145 South in the UK was no exception.

But this year, it was one with a difference as Rotary District 1145 installed Rotarian Olatunji (TJ) Olaleye as District Governor for 2025/26.  TJ is a dedicated Rotarian of many years’ standing, been involved with Rotary since the 1980s when he was at school in his native Nigeria. And he relocated, as an established medical practitioner in anaesthesia in the UK, combining Rotary duties with everyday work, and still found time to devote enough to the Club as to be chosen as District Governor of District 1145.

Rotarian TJ is the first black, first African Rotarian to assume the position of District Governor in 1145 and his celebration was in style. Very much an ‘African affair’, it had pomp, it had flair and our very own President, Dr ‘Tunde Adelakun, was there to witness it.

As Dr ‘Tunde said, ‘it is with pride that we have come to be represented at this event by me. Not only because TJ is an African, but because his district 1145 has shown genuine interest and commitment to the cause of what we are doing at Rotary Sport. TJ and I have spoken, and we will be setting up an arm of Rotary Sport in his district during his Governorship year, to reflect the enthusiasm of the people of the south of England towards sport and what it can do for society’.

Also on hand to honour TJ was Past District Governor Dr Wole Kukoyi, who mentored Rotarian TJ in Nigeria and was the first District Governor for the new District 9111 in Nigeria. His tenure ended in June 2025.

Our aim is to put ourselves about as much as possible, to show our desire to use the power of sport to connect people, and to build the family of Rotary, and to unite for the good of humanity.

ROTARY SPORT ROAD SHOW

FESTIVAL OF SPORTS GETS TO BASINGSTOKE UK

One of the major objectives of Rotary Sport is to hold sports festivals in as many towns and countries around the world as is possible. We see such festivals, a gathering of all parts of the community/society to get together, freely play sport, exchange and engage, and encourage well-being amongst one another and inspiring same in the immediate community.

After a hugely successful Sports Festival held in Kigali, Rwanda late in June, it was the turn of Basingstoke, Hampshire in the UK – the official birthplace of Rotary Sport International – on July 12, where we had another hugely successful Family Festival of Sports.

Bringing the whole of the Basingstoke community together in the name of sports, the Festival of Sports was held on the grounds of Cranbourne School, on one of the hottest days so far in the country in 2025.

Luckily, Cranbourne School availed Rotary Sport of the use of the two massive indoor sports halls in the school and they were made to full use by the people who turned up.

The event was flagged off by the combination of the Basingstoke Member of Parliament, Luke Murphy, and the Mayor of Basingstoke & Deane, Cllr Colin Philimore, who both, in separate addresses, expressed their satisfaction that sport is indeed taking a rightful centre stage position in the fabric of community, and acknowledged that the more we did of these, the more aware Basingstoke will be to the needs and benefits of sports on physical and mental wellbeing.

The Mayor and the MP got involved in the sports, as well as the President of Rotary Sport, Dr Tunde Adelakun, who took active part in the football, and the table tennis.

The camaraderie of the family of Rotary that came out in support of the event was apparent, with Rotary Club of Basingstoke, represented by President Tim Jackson, Rotary Club of Basingstoke Deane represented by Past President Mike Lakin and some members; as well as Assistant District Governor Richard Spalding, all of whom played active part in the sporting events.

There was basketball, chess and darts, and everyone took full part.

Then there was a sports quiz, which involved every part of the crowd. They were broken up into groups and the quiz was intensely fought, with knowledge of past and present sports, Olympic sports, specific sports were all tested and had to be answered to. After three rounds, the team led by Annol Macdonald-Milner win the grand quiz prize, which was a pair of tickets to watch a home game of Basingstoke Town Football Club, of their choice.

Egypt-based Annol, together with his father Philip, ended up going for the Basingstoke Town v Reading FC preseason friendly match of 26 July.

There was also a raffle, and after distribution of many consolation prizes including softball vouchers from the Basingstoke Sports Centre, t-shirts and bags, the star prize – a couple of tickets to Wembley for the Community Shield match of Liverpool v Crystal Palace – was drawn and won by Irina Rasolonjanahary.

Finally we had an awards ceremony where public-nominated sports persons were given inspiration awards by the Mayor Colin Philimore. They are Tarik Biglic, a coach in Jiu Jitsu, David Graham, secretary of the Basingstoke Chess Club, Billy Upton, captain of Basingstoke Town Football Club; and Jack Miller, Chairman of Basingstoke Town Football Club. Formal presentation of their awards will take place at the Mayor’s Parlour at a later date.
